Getting Rid of freckles

0

Can you get rid of freckles without surgery or cosmetic procedures? Short answer: yes.

Freckles… freckles… freckles. People who don’t have them want them, but for most of us who have them, we’d rather do without these ‘beauty spots’. Freckles are nothing more than concentrated deposits of melanin (the pigment in our skin). The bad news is that the cheaper and most natural freckle removal methods won’t take freckles away over night, but the good news is that there are things that we can do to fade them away, to the point where most of them disappear forever. Here are 2 solutions that you can look into to get rid of those ‘sun kisses’.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice acts similarly to a bleach when it is contact with the skin because it is acidic. Because of the acidity, it works as a mild exfoliator, removing a small portion of the lop layer of skin onto which it is applied. People use lemon juice to lighten the colour tone of their skin and freckles, and sometimes on areas like the arms to correct tan lines. Because of lemon juice’s ability to lighten the skin, it is a great tool to help fade freckles. Some freckles will even fade to the point where they are no longer visible, although some will fade but still stay. Unfortunately, this takes time and will take more than just a few days to work effectively.

Directions and Use:

Dab undiluted lemon juice on the skin to lighten up tan lines or freckles before going to bed and let it dry out. Wash off in the morning after waking up and repeat every night. The skin should start to lighten and freckles can fade – sometimes to the point of disappearing – after a few weeks.

Exfoliation

Exfoliating the skin removes the outer layer of skin which is made up of dead skin cells. Frequent, thorough exfoliation helps the skin to rejuvenate itself, even to the point where the concentrated melanin deposits (freckles) are removed and new, spot-free skin replaces the area.

Directions and Use:

DO NOT exfoliate more than once in one session and DO NOT exfoliate two days in a row. You need to give your skin time rejuvenate and give the new skin (underneath layers) time to adapt to becoming the new outside layer of skin. DO NOT scrub until your skin starts to go red or pink and DO NOT scrub until it starts to feel painful. After a good exfoliation, your skin will look shiny and polished. DO NOT exfoliate more than twice a week. The reason why you should not exfoliate too much, too often or too hard is because the point of exfoliation is to remove the uppermost layer of skin which consists of dead skin cells and overdoing it will lead to the removal (and damage) of the healthy, living skin layers which you want to be as healthy and untouched as possible to look good and rejuvenate into better looking skin. DO NOT scrub until freckles disappear and DO NOT scrub until freckles appear lighter. Just do a light scrub twice a week with a few days of ‘rest’ in-between sessions and after a few weeks, the speeding up of skin renewal brought on by exfoliation will lead to the gradual removal of the concentrated melanin formations. You will not see any differences after the first few exfoliations but freckles can fade or disappear after a few weeks to months.
One of the most popular exfoliation methods is the use of exfoliation gloves that can be purchased at most supermarkets. These gloves don’t cost too much and can be re-used over and over again. You simply put the gloves on before going into the shower or bath and then lather them with soap and water (which creates a soapy lather similar to a scrunchie). Rub the skin all over your body with the lathered gloves in circular motions and rinse when done.

Another popular method of exfoliation is through the use of pastes that contain a grainy or sandy substance that can buffer the skin. You can purchase these pastes at stores or make them at home by using combinations like baking soda and water, salt (smooth salt only because the larger, coarse salt can hurt the skin) and olive oil or even mud made with clean, treated sand and water. Rub the exfoliating paste onto the skin in circular motions for a few seconds and then rinse off afterwards.

The lemon juice and exfoliation methods are effective, cheap and easy to do. However, they will take a long time before you start seeing a difference in freckle reduction. There are, however, other methods of freckle removal that are more instant, but are more expensive and require the consultation of a professional.

Dermatologists (the skin doctors) offer freckle removal services. If you are interested in this method of freckle removal, ask your doctor for more information and for a referral to a good dermatologist in your area. During a 30 minute to 1 hour session with the dermatologist, he or she will burn off the first (outermost) layers of skin on a freckle to instantly remove it. This does hurt, but the burning off motion takes about a second per freckle and a dermatologist could take off over 50 freckles in a single session. Your skin will need time(usually a few days to two weeks) to heal from this in the areas where the doctor has taken off the freckles and it will look like you have chicken pox with all the red marks (and in some cases, scabs) where the doctor has removed freckles.
Another method of freckle removal is more expensive and uses intensive light pulses which penetrate through to the deepest layers of skin to break up melanin formations. After this light stimulation, the freckles start to break up and disappear after a day or two. This does not damage then skin or make any marks, and actually also helps to keep the skin looking younger.

Well there you have it, who said you couldn’t have the body you want!?
STAY STRONG!

Why Size Doesnt Win Bodybuilding Competitons

0

The Biggest Mistake Most Aspiring Bodybuilders Make

The biggest mistake they make is assuming that the goal is to get as big as possible and that their success on stage is proportionate to the amount of muscle mass they can bring to the show.

Ever been to a bodybuilding show and wondered why the biggest guy is placed lower then someone clearly smaller than them? The judges arent blind, they are just judging according to different ideals than you. While size is what distinguishes us from the rest of the world, is it only one factor in determining the ultimate Bodybuilder. Size is important, but certainly not the most crucial part of winning.

The Other Important Factors That Judges Assess

Symmetry

You could be twice the size of the guy next to you, but if any muscular imbalances are visible to the naked eye, you could be giving your spot away to your smaller, but symmetrical, competitor. Judges grade competitors on a points system. Body symmetry will lose you the most points without you knowing it. Have a good look in the mirror... we all have a good side and a not as good side, but one of your eternal goals will be to close this gap as much as you can. You need to work hard to firstly find any parts of your body that dont quite match the other half. Only upon closer inspection might you see that your left peck slightly dominates your right. Not a big issue in normal life, but a possible I dont know why I didnt win card you deal yourself time and time again on stage. Correcting imbalances like this is very important.

Posing Ability

What are the best poses and which poses do you do on stage? Have you practiced them in front of the mirror so many times that it now feels natural and comfortable? More importantly, do you know how to execute each pose so that every body part and muscle is flexed in such a way that it boasts your physique in the best possible light? Take a good look at the next show you attend and take note of who knows how to pose the best, in your opinion. Match those up to the winners afterwards and you will be surprised at how much posing ability actually determines the winner. Judges can easily see the difference between people who are completely in-touch with what makes their bodies look the best with each pose and those who are just doing what the others are doing and just going with it.

Everybody is different. Take the front double biceps pose. Do you know which body parts this pose emphasizes and how you should hold this particular pose for your bodys best look? With practice you will find that perhaps you need to bend your knees a little more to show off the leg muscles or rotate your feet in a certain direction to get the best calf angles.

Stage Presence

Do you look like the newbie who is still trying to come to terms with the bright light in your eyes when you first walk on stage? As the audience turns their attention to you when your name is called out, is your body language that of a champion that deserves to carry the legacy of Bodybuilding forward to the next generation? Does your body language show nerves or an Im trying not to look scared face? Walk with confidence. Let your presence on stage depict a VICTOR in need of reckoning. This takes time, but you need to work on developing a persona that envelopes the crowd. With time, you need to learn to conquer the crowd, dont let the crowd conquer you. Command admiration, and it shall be given to you. Walk like the champion, be seen as the champion.

Proportion

Do you know what one of the other destroyers of would-be champs is? Calves! Upper-body and lower-body proportions are absolutely important and bigger competitors are often placed below their smaller peers because of body proportion. If you have freakishly large pecks, make sure the rest of your body is just as freakishly large or it would actually work against you. You cannot afford to lose the placement you deserve because your one muscle group is larger or smaller then what is considered proportionate to the rest of your body. You need to work on keeping everything in proportion. Imagine trying to not let any other body part outshine the other. My chest is smaller but my bigger arms will make up for it in the show, said one loser to another. Huge friends of mine have lost shows purely because of certain muscles being out of proportion to the rest of their bodies. We often see bigger guys lose to smaller guys because their legs werent in proportion to the rest of their body.

Muscle Definition

How well can each muscle be seen in each muscle group? Can you see all three heads on your triceps, for example? Reducing body fat and decreasing water reserves in the body to reveal the muscles underneath come into play here. Being able to show the muscles you worked hard on getting are JUST AS IMPORTANT as the size of those muscles youve worked on. Get all the muscle in the world, but if they arent clearly seen, whats the point in entering a competition?

The Total Look

Every bodybuilding show has a certain look they tend to lean towards. You need to look the part. Winners are chosen amongst those who a certain bodybuilding organisation or federation feel would fit their image and embody what they feel is the picture of the ultimate bodybuilder according to their standards. Do you look like someone who would be sponsored by big companies? How far is your look from the guy that these competitions try to find? We all have a different image in our heads, but there definitely similarities in general. The Look comprises of your body, face, haircut, outfits, body language, persona, eye contact, and more, even down to skin tone. Work on creating the look that these organisations are after. Be the one they chose because you are their prefect poster boy.

So, as you can see, size doesnt win bodybuilding competitions because it is only one aspect that will be judged to find the Ultimate Bodybuilding Champion. Work hard on all these often under-looked areas above and you will be well on your way to placing better and better after each bodybuilding competition. Work hard, we hope to see you on the next magazine!

The Effects of Smoking on Bodybuilding

0

Looking to take your bodybuilding endeavors to the next level by finally putting down those nasty cigarettes but need the motivation and some information to give you that push you need to quit? Well then, dear smoker, you are at the right place!

We all know that smoking is bad for you, and that it hampers your training progression. Here is a list of reasons why quitting smoking will help you to get bigger, stronger and fitter.

Smoking Harms Blood Sugar Levels

Nicotine causes a quick, short-term release of blood sugar. This is one of the reasons why smoking often leads to diabetes. It also lowers insulin sensitivity, which means that your body is less able to handle sugar and energy production. The less your body is able to create and utilize energy, the less energy you have during workouts and you get tired quicker. Your strength is also hampered, which means that if you didn’t smoke, you would probably be able to lift heavier weights, for more reps, for a longer period of time, causing a greater stimulus leading to greater muscle gains. Insulin helps to regulate sugar and therefore energy. Because your body is less able to regulate energy, it is less able to perform other functions that require energy that it needs to do to adapt and grow muscle, such as filling muscles with glycogen (the energy in the muscle that enables it to work). Because energy is already lowered in smokers, their bodies take longer to change from a stress-induced state that exercise causes to the anabolic, repairing state that grows muscle and strength. When the body stays longer in this stress-induced state, it will start breaking down muscle as a survival mechanism for energy and nutrients.

Smoking affects Your Breathing and Oxygen Levels

One of the most important roles of the lungs is to take in oxygen from the surrounding air and expel carbon dioxide out. Smoking physically damages the lungs, and also progressively smothers the lungs with tar. Additionally, the lungs are also too busy trying to heal and clean themselves out to function optimally. This greatly reduces the amount of oxygen that the body has at its disposal and the amount of carbon dioxide it can get rid of. This leads to decreased energy and strength, lengthened recovery times needed between workouts and a lowered ability for muscle to grow and adapt from stimulus.

Carbon Monoxide and other Toxins

Smoking increases the amount of carbon monoxide in the blood, along with other toxins. The naked eye can see the different between the blood of a smoker and that of a non-smoker. The blood of smokers is thicker and darker than that of non-smokers. If you think about blood and veins as a road which acts as the body’s delivery system, then the carbon monoxide and other toxins can be seen as elephants in the road that take up a space that is not designed to accommodate them. They get in the way of the other vehicles and stop them from doing their job properly, turning an efficient road into peak traffic on damaged roads. The body is also less able to respond the way we want it to with weight training because it is busy fighting off and trying to cope with these harmful chemicals. For example, these chemicals place an unnecessary burden on the liver and kidneys which are metabolizing and eliminating these chemicals, on top of regulating and creating chemicals needed for growth.

Smokers Get More Sick

Smokers get sick more often than non-smokers, and when they fall ill, they are sick for longer and experience worse symptoms. We all know about the terror of falling sick and being unable to gym, as well as feeling like we are losing all the strength and size gains we have worked so hard to get. Getting sick more often means that your body spends less time in the gym, and less time growing from strength to strength and the worse symptoms mean that you suffer greater setbacks every time you get sick.

Smoking Disrupts Eating and Diet Habits

Eating the amounts of food you need in order to gain mass can sometimes be challenging. The increased appetite from quitting smoking is a great chance to stock up on the extra calories that you need to increase muscle growth. In the long term, smoking will no longer interfere with your appetite and blood sugar levels.

Sleep

Smokers not only need more hours of sleep than non-smokers, but their sleep is of less quality. One reason for this is because their bodies spend a lot of time trying to cope with the demands placed on it from smoking. Another reason is because of the nicotine withdrawal they go through while sleep. Getting better quality sleep as a non-smoker means that your body is better able to recover and grow muscle every night you sleep.

Recovering From Smoking Instead of Growing

As mentioned earlier, smoking placed a big burden on the body and the body is in a constant battle to deal with its harmful effects and survive. This energy that the body spends counteracting the negative effects of smoking would be much better spent building muscle.

Smoking and Focus during Workouts

Smokers are less able to concentrate because they are in constant withdrawal from nicotine. This withdrawal starts a few minutes after their last cigarette and builds up as time goes by. Withdrawals usually get to a point where people start craving another cigarette after 30 minutes, which is why the average person smokes a box (20 cigarettes) a day. As time drags on, withdrawals intensify, leading to symptoms like thirst, moodiness, dropped sugar levels, lack of concentration etc. These withdrawals mean that smokers are generally not as able as non-smokers to focus 100% on their entire workout program.

Smokers Take Longer to Build Muscle and Reach Greater Levels of Fitness than Non-smokers

Can you grow muscle if you smoke? Yes. Can you get bigger muscles than most people who go to the gym if you smoke?  Yes. Can you compete in bodybuilding competitions and have a successful bodybuilding career as a smoker? Yes. Can you do all these things with the same amount of time and energy compared to if you didn’t smoke? No. You can still get there, but the road will be longer and tougher.

Rather quit smoking and give your body every fighting chance that you can to reach your goals as quick as possible. STAY STRONG!

Bodybuilding Makes You Smarter

0

Bodybuilding actually makes you smarter! You will do better at your studies, perform better at work and have greater cognitive power if you are a bodybuilder. Taking part in the sport will increase your overall IQ over time. Here is a list of reasons why.

The Better the Body, the Better the Brain

Our bodies are interconnected. Our physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual states are in-tune and dependent on one another. A mental state cannot work without a physical state. Therefore, the healthier our physical bodies are, the better we can perform mentally. Lifters work to improve their physical states and this leads to natural, healthy performance. Since our bodies are healthier and stronger than normal, our brains are housed in bodies that are more physically able to provide more for our mental needs. Having a body that is less challenging to physically sustain translates to having minds can run more freely without needing to adapt to physical demands like physical weakness and other bodily problems.

Bodybuilding Increases Blood Flow and Oxygen to the Brain

Physical exercise - especially high intensity exercise - increases our bodys ability to transport blood around the entire body, which benefits our brains without us even knowing it. The amount of oxygen we take in with each breath and the percentage of that that we can actually use increases as well, which means that there is more blood-rich oxygen for the brain to use. Ever heard of the concept that the deeper we breath in, the healthier and smarter we are? No need to walk around taking ridiculously large breaths all the time, simple exercise increases our blood flow and blood oxygen levels.

Bodybuilding Provides Escapism and Mental Breaks That Aid Brain Development

Over training is just as dangerous for the brain as it is for our bodies. Reading is a great means physical rest, just as exercising is a great way to rest your head whilst still advancing in life. These mental breaks give your brain a chance to rest, recover and recap on its current challenges before being used again to a higher intensity. The brain is a muscle which has a mental output instead of a physical or forceful output like the other muscles. Exercise is a great way to speed up mental recovery and adaption (growth) from daily stimuli and stresses placed on it.

Better Choices

The choices that bodybuilders make benefit their brains as well, although they make these choices to primarily better their bodies. Bodybuilders are more likely to drink less alcohol, avoid smoking and eat less junk food, which damages the brain. The choices we make which better our bodies are very likely to benefit our brains at the same time.

Bodybuilding Gives You a Goal

Bodybuilders have a great sense of purpose because they have goals that they achieve and then set new goals to work towards. This sense of purpose and sense of achievement after reaching predetermined goals are highly beneficial to our mental states. Our brain positively responds to these cycles and indirectly increases our mental confidence, performance, and refreshment.

Cures Mental Problems Before They Happen

Exercise is one of the best ways to fight depression - a mental condition - and people who take part in bodybuilding for a prolonged period of time are less likely to develop negative mental conditions later in life like depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, panic attacks, addiction, insomnia, paranoia, and personality disorders. Bodybuilding might be preventing you from getting an underlying mental condition that you would have experienced later on down the line if you didnt hit the gym.

Bodybuilding Keeps You Younger

We age as the cells in our bodies slowly lose their ability to regenerate and start to die off. Exercise slows down this process because through the challenges that exercise brings, we unknowingly reprogram our bodies to keep adapting to a stimulus and as a result our individual cells learn to regenerate at a faster pace. In the event of aging, it takes a longer time for our cells to lose their ability to regenerate and they start dying much later than usual if they if been put under an increased demand to regrow for longer periods of time (years). This is why medical aid schemes can determine your health status through an age test. The younger your body appears in this test, the healthier you are. Our brains are very susceptible to aging just like our bodies and physical appearance. Two people might be the same age, but their physical health will be different which means that their bodies are operating as if they are older or younger than usual. Bodybuilders undergo exercising and dieting regimes which reverse the aging process (unfortunately not faster than what will occur naturally) which brings benefits for minds as well as our bodies and appearance. Being able to operate as if you were younger means that you could have the bright mind of and 21 year old, even though you are 60 years old.

Bodybuilding Relieves Stress

Just like how the steam room could relieve stress placed on the body, exercise relieves mental stresses placed on us throughout the day. If these mental stresses and not relieved (like through exercise, relaxation, or social interaction), they can accumulate and lead to diminished cognitive function and even negative mental conditions mentioned above.

Bodybuilding Makes You Happier

Exercise releases endorphins, the brains happy hormone. Exercise also helps to eliminate stress hormones the brain releases when under stress (much like how our muscles release lactic acid when under stress). The endorphin release is what gives you that great on top of the world feeling when you leave the gym and is why some of us feel a little depressed when we dont work out for a few days. By regulating mental hormones like endorphin release and stress hormone elimination, regular exercise keeps your brain healthy and happy, allowing it to grow and develop to its best potential all the time, as well as preventing any negative build-up that might accumulate through time.

Higher Immunity = More Brain Growth Time

Bodybuilders generally have a higher immunity than other people and get sick less often, which is great for our heads. When we get sick, our brain development is slowed down as our bodies prioritize survival and fighting sickness instead of increasing our mental ability to respond to cognitive challenges. This is why it is harder to take in information, work, or pay attention when you are sick. The less time we are sick, the more time we have to stimulate our brains through social interaction, studies or work and the better our brains recover and grow as a response to that.

Nutrients!

The same nutrients that are great for our bodies are often favourable for our brains as well. Fish, protein, complex carbs, vitamins, glutamine, and veggies which are a large part of bodybuilding diets are fantastic nutrient sources for the brain as well. Exercise increases the absorption and utility of these nutrients in the blood stream, which makes them more available for our brain just as much as these nutrients are readily available for the rest if our bodies to use.

So there you have it. Bodybuilding makes you smarter!
